Lower Your Quarantine Expectations

You don't have to use this time to reach your biggest dreams. Surviving can be your only aspiration.

Hi, it’s Jasmyne with Relate Family Therapy in Centennial, Colorado. I want to tell you that I haven’t organized even one closet or pantry through all of this. I had high hopes when I first was home, thinking that maybe I’d get to something like that and reorganize something big in my life and look at it like a triumph for the day. I haven’t gotten to it. The fact of it is is that I don’t get a lot of downtime to just sit around and think about the things that need to be organized, and I’m betting you don’t get as much as you thought you would either. Watching a show on Netflix or stepping outside to walk the dogs seems to be the norm these days. But we’re all stressed. We’re worried. And we feel preoccupied. The energy that’s going into our lives is just making us a little more tired. There are things in the world that are bigger than us. They’re scary. And they feel like they’re taking over what was our normalcy before. Being okay with that is okay. You don’t have to take on a new skill and learn some big thing while you’re at home for this next month. The reality is just being safe, staying healthy, and staying sane are the best things to be doing right now. Give yourselves a break. A true break. A break from feeling like you need to be more than what you are. Just be. You don’t have to make color-coded schedules for your kids. You don’t have to make sure they’re getting all of their homework done exactly how it’s supposed to be. You don’t have to make 5-star meals. Just get through, feel good about your day, and stay healthy.
