I even went as far as showing them where to find the recipe. I figured this was a fairly simple request and something they could do together.
They were able to buy brownie mix. It just sat there and sat there and sat there. Baseball games, football games, volleyball games, school conferences, and choir concerts passed.
I’ve noticed that the boxes of brownies were sitting there but most of the time I didn’t think about it or care. Today I had some time and saw those boxes still sitting there. I decided I was just going to make them.
Normally, I’d probably have some passive aggressive comment and cutesy remark that I’d say to my husband in his lack of follow through. He’s been going through a lot lately and it makes sense this was the ball he dropped, so I’m going to give him a pass.
He did buy me an ice cream cake on my birthday, probably knowing that those brownies would just sit there.
So here I am making my birthday brownies. The truth is that they will probably be much better than the brownies that my family would prepare. That reminds me of a time many moons ago that it was my grandma‘s birthday. She had made a beautiful cake that she had decorated herself for her birthday.
My uncle was there as we were getting ready to celebrate her and eat the cake. He said something to her about making her own cake to which she replied, “well, I make it better!” with a little laugh and the indignation that that was true. It was true. She was the best baker.
We were lucky to get her cakes, and she wanted in on the action! I do like when people take care of me and make the effort to create something for me.
In the age of disposable items, Amazon, five dollar bins at Target, it so rare these days to get something homemade that it feels really special. So I guess that was what was behind my birthday wish.
Right now, though, I’ll surprise them with my birthday brownies when they come home. They will get to enjoy something special with me that took a bit more of my effort. My family knows that when it comes to celebrating holidays and making desserts, well, I do it better.
