Summer is here, which means it’s time to relax! That’s not something I’ve ever been very good at doing. When I was little, my grandma used to call me a wiggle butt. My husband has affectionately taken it on as one of my nicknames. It is very tough for me to sit still and just be. I find that it’s easier for me to just be when I’m running around, cooking, thinking about what to do next, organizing, and generally being my usual “Whirling Derbish self”.
There are times when summer does bring out that slow, long burn of relaxation. The pool is a good place to start. In therapy land, summer can be a great time to work through some of the more pressing issues that have come up in life. Trauma is often handled better when there’s a walk outside and fresh air to be had after a session.
Although it’s not my strong suit, I plan to find some quiet nights to enjoy the sunset, have a cold drink, watch my kids, and really make the most of this time of year. There is something rejuvenating about summer. So when you sit back and enjoy fresh tomatoes from your garden, mow your lawn, do that first belly flop- take a second to really enjoy it. Those autumn leaves will be here before we know it, so let’s savor every drop.
