Sandra Selvon-Semin MA, LPCC

Hello, I’m Sandra

Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate

My job is not to judge but to build a level of trust, provide support, encourage the client to feel safe in expressing thoughts, feelings, and symptoms while working alongside them to find solutions and tools to manage their life situations.

I am originally from Mauritius, a very small tropical island paradise located in the Indian Ocean. I have lived in the US for the last 27 years and still get to visit family back home and in Europe fairly frequently. French is my first language but unfortunately I do not get to practice it as much as I would like to. With a military background, I was fortunate to move around the country spending much time on the west coast, the Midwest, and Florida. I moved back to Colorado a year ago with all three of my children, and I’m happy to be here on a more permanent basis. This is where we feel most at home. I enjoy hiking, camping, paddle boarding, running, volunteering, hot yoga, soaking up the sun on my deck in the early morning, and last minute road trips.

I AM AN EMPATHETIC THERAPIST WITH A BACKGROUND WORKING WITH INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE CO-OCCURRING DIAGNOSES, COLLEGE STUDENTS, MILITARY FAMILIES, COUPLES, AND CHILDREN DEALING WITH SUCH ISSUES AS SUBSTANCE USE, RELATIONSHIP CHALLENGES, PARENTING STRUGGLES, ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND LIFE TRANSITION COMPLICATIONS. I ALSO ENJOY COUNSELING INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES FROM DIVERSE CULTURAL, ETHNIC, AND SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS. I BELIEVE THAT EACH PERSON IS UNIQUE AND DOING THE BEST THEY CAN, CONSIDERING THE CONTEXT THEY LIVE IN, THEIR PAST EXPERIENCES, AND THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT EXIST AND HAVE EXISTED IN THEIR LIVES. HOWEVER, IT IS ALSO MY BELIEF THAT PEOPLE ALL HAVE THE ABILITY TO HEAL AND MAKE THE CHANGES THEY SO DESIRE IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE. I CONSIDER IT A GIFT, AND I FEEL HONORED, THAT I CAN BE PART OF MY CLIENTS’ JOURNEYS OF SELF-IMPROVEMENT AND SELF-DISCOVERY.

  • Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adams State University
I WAS A BUSINESS OWNER AND GRAPHIC DESIGNER AFTER FINISHING MY UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES IN APPLIED COMPUTING. AFTER SEVERAL YEARS, I REALIZED THAT THERE WAS STILL A VOID IN MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE. AS A MILITARY WIFE AT THAT TIME, I WAS STRUCK BY THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS THAT STILL EXISTS, TO THIS DAY, IN MILITARY CULTURE. I MADE THE BOLD DECISION TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL FOR MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING. I FEEL THAT IT WAS THE BEST CAREER DECISION BECAUSE, FOR ME, IT IS A PASSION AND NOT JUST A JOB. SINCE BECOMING A THERAPIST, I HAVE WORKED WITH VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES; I HAVE SPENT A YEAR WORKING IN REHAB, FOLLOWED BY COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH IN A VERY RURAL AREA IN FLORIDA, WHERE I ALSO TAUGHT PARENTING AND ADDICTION CLASSES TO TEENS AND ADULTS. MOST RECENTLY, I WORKED WITH END OF LIFE CLIENTS. I FIND THAT I WORK BEST WITH FAMILIES, COUPLES, PARENTS, CHILDREN, AND INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE A HISTORY OF TRAUMA AND ITS SYMPTOMS, SUCH AS DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, SELF-HARM, GRIEF, AND ADDICTION.
