Melissa Kallweit, MA, LPCC

Hello, I’m MELISSA

Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate

I approach clients without judgment and through a lens of respect and high positive regard, no matter what past experiences they bring in the room or what their background is. I believe this high value I have for my clients is what allows our therapeutic relationship to thrive.

I am a Colorado native who loves all things outdoors, especially horses, gardening and camping.  Most of all, I love time with my family.  Even though I was born in Colorado, I lived in many different states while growing up, although it our moves were not military-related.

IN THE ROOM WITH MY CLIENTS, I STRIVE TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE OF HIGH REGARD, RESPECT, CALMNESS, COMPASSION, AND SAFETY. WE WILL COLLABORATE ON GOALS AND THE AGENDA FOR THERAPY. THIS WAY WE CAN MAKE SURE WE ARE BOTH GOING IN THE SAME DIRECTION AND HAVE THE SAME EXPECTATIONS FOR THERAPY. WE WILL WORK TOGETHER TO BRING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE.

I SPENT MANY YEARS IN THE MEDICAL FIELD AS A MEDICAL ASSISTANT WORKING WITH THE ELDERLY POPULATION, ORTHOPEDICS, AND FAMILY PRACTICE. THIS EXPERIENCE GAVE ME THE INSIGHT TO HOW THE BODY RESPONDS TO STRESS, EATING HABITS, AND OVERALL LIFE STYLE – IN THE MIND, AS WELL AS THE BODY. THIS INTRIGUED ME, AND I CHANGED MY MAJOR FROM BIOLOGY TO PSYCHOLOGY AND REALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH OUR BIG, BEAUTIFUL BRAIN!

I HAVE WORKED WITH MANY POPULATIONS IN MY MENTAL HEALTH CAREER, INCLUDING WITH THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA, ADDICTION, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND OTHER SEVERE MENTAL HEALTH DIAGNOSES. WHEN I STARTED IN THE FIELD OF MENTAL HEALTH, I WAS A CASEWORKER FOR CLIENTS WHO NEEDED HELP IN OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM. I HAVE ALSO LEAD GROUPS FOR THOSE WITH DUI’S OR DRUG OFFENSES, AS WELL AS A WOMEN’S ONLY GROUP WITH AN EMPHASIS ON ART THERAPY. SEEING PEOPLE FREE THEMSELVES FROM THEIR PAIN IS THE MOST REWARDING OUTCOME, AND IT IS AN HONOR TO BE A SMALL PIECE IN THEIR STORY.
